One night Restaurant

The spatial strategy of the pop-up

restaurant is one of sequence and

repetition, where the theatrical elements of a play are architecturally “translated” to form each of the dining spaces, while the transition spaces within between each of these rooms reflect the intermissions. The form begins as a heavy and dense structure that slowly refines

itself to become an open and light space as you reach the altar. As the diner moves through the space, there is a sense of drama unfolding, culminating in a sense of finality and resolution, much like the end of a play.

The brief was to design a series of contemplative spaces with a landscape component that could support a food and wine bar after hours. An overall emphasis was placed on developing a dramatic result based on design experimentation, innovation and renewed experience.

The clients- the City of Sydney saw the existing built qualities of the site as the foundations for their creative and functional needs while desiring a new insertion that will experiment with materials, form, light and shadow to form a tranquil location during the day, and a busy bustling space at night.

“Architecture is often seen as the art of a thinking mind that arranges, organizes and establishes relationships between the parts and the whole. It is also seen as the art of designing spaces, which we experience through movement and use.” Sophia Psarra

In the context of shifting consumer behaviour and the challenge from online retailing, the project explores the potential for interior space to act and re-enact a continuous telling and retelling of brand values, aspirations and experiences.
